Rambouillet Estate and gardens

The creation of the formal parkland in the French sytle by Fleuriau d'Armenonville dates from1699. The parkland contains terraces, parterres and staggered rows of lime trees.  From the Grand Canal flowing through the estate the count of Toulouse dug a network of secondary channels forming a succession of geometrically formed islands which were formerly home to statues and are now sanctuaries for wildlife. In 1779 the Duc de Penthievre laid out a landscaped garden in a picturesque style with follies, a grotto capped with a Chinese pavilion, a hermitage and a shell pavilion. Later, Hubert Robert supervised work on the dairy area.

The towering majestic avenue of bald cypresses is the great curiosity of this parkland. These uncommon and astonishing trees (Latin name: Taxodium distichum) were grown from seeds brought from Louisiana in the XVIIIth, forgotten from almost one century and then finally sown in Napoleon's time.
