Recently, the estate and ruins of the abbey of Port-Royal des Champs and the nationally-owned Granges de Port-Royal estate were amalgamated to form the nationally-owned estate of Port-Royal des Champs. On your excursions from Paris to the Yvelines, be sure to take the opportunity to visit this focal point of Jansenist thought, with the ruins of the abbey destroyed on the orders of Louis XIV and the museum housed in what was the Petites Ecoles building. It was here that the so-called Solitaires accommodated and taught some of their pupils, among them the celebrated dramatist Jean Racine. Today it is home to a rich collection of engravings, old books, portraits and works reflecting the history and the battles of conscience which were fought out here several centuries ago. Religious paintings by Philippe de Champaigne, a friend of Port-Royal, as well as portraits and drawings from the XVIIIth century round off your visit to this historic site on your day trips from Paris.
