In the Salle du Jeu de Paume, built in 1686, one has the feeling that time has stood still. Seeing the nets which are still in place to protect the windows from tennis balls, it is easy to imagine Louis XIV and his Court standing in the middle of this large rectangular room.
On the far wall, the painting by Luc-Olivier Merson, after David, is a reminder of the famous Oath taken on the 20th of June 1789 by the deputies of the Third Estate and the Lower Clergy when they had been thrown out of the Hôtel des Menus Plaisirs.
Apart from the many marble busts of leading members of the Third Estate there is the statue of Bailly by R. Saint-Marceaux, erected on the spot from which he presided over the Assembly.
