The museum is situated on the site of the former abbey of Port-Royal des Champs, wich was abandonned in 1710 and fell into ruin.
At the beginning of the XIXth century, the abbey and the Granges were split up and Louis Silvy, the new proprietor of the abbey estate, had a new branch of the old canal crossing the estate excavated and also planted limes marking the lines of the former cloisters.
Since the beginning of this century, several development projects on the estate have enhanced the appeal of the grounds of the Granges and the former abbey, notabily the Solitaires'orchard in front of the principal residential building.
