The Upper Chevreuse Valley in the Yvelines near Paris is a predominantly rural region of alternating arable plateaux and secluded valleys extending over the upper reaches of two small rivers, the Yvette and the Rémarde. Agriculture, forests and open countryside cover around 90% of the land. Its highly varied cultural heritage is a reflection of the prestigious past history of the Upper Chevreuse Valley.
Apart from renowned attractions such as the Château de Breteuil, the Château de Dampierre and the Abbey of Port-Royal-des-Champs, it is home to a host of smaller treasures. There is not a village that does not boast at least a château, a country manor, a historic stately home or the remains of some fortifications dating from feudal times. This precious heritage, which can easily be visited on your excursions from Paris and enjoyed on walks, could have suffered appalling damage had it not been for the creation, in 1985, of the Paris region’s first Regional Nature Park.
Incorporating twenty-one communes which, along with the Yvelines authorities and those of the Ile-de-France region, took up the challenge of preserving natural habitats and promoting environmentally-compatible development, the Park is a site of special interest and importance for everyone to discover on walks and enjoy on their excursions from Paris.
