The French-style formal gardens in the grounds of the Château de Breteuil were laid out around 1900 by the Duchênes. Comprising a large ornamental lake and parterres of trimmed yew and box hedging, the grounds form a magnificient setting for the château itself and the gardens are set in landscaped parkland on one of the slopes of the Chevreuse valley. Banks of rhododendrond in spring, carpets of wild cyclamen in autumn and a collection of remarkable trees can be seen on strolls leading to two romantic ponds. In a valley bottom, a number of remarkable chestnut trees, the remnants of an XVIIIth century plantation, have become home to noctural birds of prey and woodland insects.
This natural heritage is now enrichedby contemporary creations on the XVIIIth century Italianate terraces, on the oldest of which is now the Prince's Garden - The Jardin des Princes - made up of collectors'perennials, shrub peonies, Japanese cherries and a host of other shrubs, the whole being laid out around the reservoir which once supplied the kitchen and fruit garden and along a pergola covered with roses in the spring.
